Active Learning Preschool
in St Augustine, Florida
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math. This is a project-based curriculum where children are encouraged to form questions and do research using hands-on exploration. Building on natural curiosity, children are encouraged to interact, question, connect, problem-solve, communicate, reflect, and more! STEAM is an afternoon program and available for all students that stay until 2:30pm or later.
At Chapel School, we utilize the HighScope Preschool Curriculum. Learning is focused on eight content areas, which are based on the dimensions of school readiness identified by the National Education Goals Panel. HighScope's curriculum content areas are:
Approaches to Learning
Social and emotional development
Physical development and health
Language, literacy, and communication
Science and technology
While learning in these content areas prepares
children for later schooling, HighScope takes the
learning process beyond traditional academic subjects by applying methods that promote independence, curiosity, decision making, cooperation, persistence, creativity, and problem solving in young children.
Our daily routine includes both child-directed and adult-directed activities as well as small- and large-group times. Our goal is to help children become self-reliant problem-solvers who are ready and eager to learn when they reach elementary school.
In our VPK classes, small-group activities engage children in four key areas of early literacy learning: comprehension, phonological awareness, alphabetic principle, and concepts about print. Children's knowledge of these concepts is a solid predictor of their reading achievement in later years.
